Sources indicate that Shaheen’s captaincy for the T20 Cricket World Cup is in danger, and Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan is a strong candidate for the captaincy.
The decision to change the captain of Lahore Qalandars was made due to their poor performance in PSL season 9.
After the 2023 World Cup, our national team played their first T20 series under Shaheen’s captaincy against New Zealand, where the green shirts suffered a heavy defeat, losing the series 4-1.
In contrast, Shaheen led Lahore Qalandars to win the Pakistan Super League title twice, but if we talk about PSL 9, Shaheen’s captaincy was very poor, resulting in the team winning only one match and finishing last in the points table.
If Rizwan wins PSL 9, there will be significantly higher chances for him to be considered for the captaincy for the New Zealand series and the T20 World Cup.
However, if he doesn’t win, perhaps the PCB chairman might consider giving Shaheen a chance. But if Multan Sultans lift the trophy in PSL 9, then the challenges may increase for Shaheen.
Sources are indicating that the new PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, will hold meetings regarding this matter after the PSL. Mohsin Naqvi is receiving recommendations for a captain change, but currently, he has gone to Dubai to attend an ICC meeting. After that, he intends to meet with ex-players after the PSL final, following which a final decision will be made.
